DITS-SID Training: Trauma assessment in individuals with severe or moderate intellectual disabilities
Trauma- and stressor-related symptoms occur relatively frequently in individuals with severe and moderate intellectual disabilities. Due to limitations in cognitive and adaptive functioning, it is often more challenging for them to cope with traumatic or other stressful life events. In addition, they are exposed to potentially traumatic events relatively often. As a result, they are at increased risk of developing trauma-related symptoms and disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
In this training, participants learn how to systematically assess traumatic and stressful events and their consequences using the DITS-SID. The DITS-SID, developed by Eemhart, was designed for individuals with severe or moderate intellectual disabilities and is administered to a relative or other caregiver who knows the individual well. The DITS-SID may also be applicable to individuals with profound intellectual disabilities, as the DSM-5-TR PTSD criteria for children aged six years and younger are likely to be appropriate for these individuals as well.
During the training, you will learn to:
- Recognise trauma-related symptoms in individuals with severe or moderate intellectual disabilities
- Administer the DITS-SID in a responsible and reliable manner
- Identify appropriate treatment and referral options
The training combines theoretical knowledge with practical exercises and case discussions. Upon completion, participants will be able to apply the DITS-SID responsibly and contribute to the timely recognition of trauma-related symptoms and the provision of appropriate support and treatment.
Who should attend?
Psychologists and other professionals with diagnostic qualifications working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. Participants may work in a variety of settings, including intellectual disability services, youth care, mental health services, or special education.

The training combines theoretical instruction, practical exercises, case discussions, and feedback on participant’s video-recorded DITS-SID administrations.
